Sheriff Thomas was born in Fort Jackson, South Carolina to Harry and Linda Thomas. He moved back to Madison County in 1977 with his family. Sheriff Thomas attended Madison County High School and graduated in 1994. After graduating from MCHS, he served in the United States Marine Corps until 1998. While in the Marine Corps, he served in Rota, Spain with the Marine Corps Security Force Battalion and with Alpha Company 1st Battalion 2nd Marine Regiment in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. Valuable experience was gained in the military in the areas of leadership, security, integrity, and a commitment to excellence.

After he ended his service in the Marine Corps in 1998, he went to work for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office as a detention officer. He attended the Northeast Georgia Police Academy in 1999 and went to the patrol division for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. He attained the rank of Sgt at Madison County and sought out professional learning opportunities to improve his job abilities. In 2007 he left the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and went to work for the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.
In 2008, he was elected as Sheriff of Madison County and went to work for the people of Madison County.

It is the mission of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office to maintain social order within prescribed ethical and constitutional limits while also providing professional law enforcement, detention, and communications services. We will enforce the law in a fair and impartial manner, recognizing both the statutory and judicial limitations of police authority and the constitutional rights of all persons.
