It is the mission of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office to maintain social order within prescribed ethical and constitutional limits while also providing professional law enforcement, detention, and communications services. We will enforce the law in a fair and impartial manner, recognizing both the statutory and judicial limitations of police authority and the constitutional rights of all persons.
Sheriff Kip C. Thomas is proud to announce a Firearms Familiarization Course made available to the citizens of Madison County.  The response to this class has been tremendous!  Our first class was held on March 19, 2011 and we have since held classes on several more occassions.   Presently we are tyring to hold one class each month to accomodate the number of applicants in a timely manner.  Sheriff Thomas intends to offer this class as long as he is Sheriff.
The class is an eight hour class consisting of classroom training as well as hands-on training out on the range.  The first portion of the class is in the training room covering the topics of:  Laws Governing Use of Deadly Force, Firearms Permits, Basic Firearms Safety, and the Basics of Marksmenship.  After lunch, we make our way to the range for one on one hands on training where we will implement what was discussed that morning.  While on the range, each student is paired with a deputy sheriff from the Madison County Sheriff's Office who will coach them on proper shooting techniques.  For this reason, we ask that if you own a handgun you bring your weapon and approximately 20 rounds of ammunition to the training so that you can become familiar with how your weapon operates and comfortable with firing your weapon.  However, if you do not already own a handgun we will have varoius types on hand for you to try.
Please check the calendar located on the upcoming events page to see the dates of future classes.  Once a date has been set and applications processed, students will be notified by mail of their acceptance and given instruction for day of training.  Due to the nature of this training, and to allow for more one-on-one time with the instructors, we limit the number of students to 25.  In the event that we receive more applications for one date than we have seats available the extra applicants will be placed on a waitlist for any openings or the next availble date.
If you are interested in taking this course, please download the application on the left hand side of the page and return it to the office in person or via fax to 706-795-2999 or email to sburns@madisonco.us Feel free to call the Sheriff's Office if you have any additional questions.  Take a minute to browse our photo gallery below.
