The safety of children is important to Sheriff Thomas and his deputies at the Madison County Sheriff's Office.  For this reason, Sheriff Thomas completed the 32 hour training to become a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Seat Technician (CPST) in August of 2011, and intends to certify as many of his patrol deputies as possible.  Currently, the Sheriff's Office has 13 CPST's, and one instructor.  The course is a 4-day, 32-hour course.  During which students are educated on the proper selection, direction, and installation of all types of child safety seats.  Once a student has completed the 32-hour course, he/she must take continuing education classes to maintain the certification.
During normal business hours there is at least one technician at the office that can answer any questions you may have concerning proper installation or seat selection.  You can also come to the office and have your seat checked for proper installation and use anytime during normal business hours.  If it is not durning normal business hours and you have a question regarding your child safety seat, please contact our dispatch center at 706-795-2101 and ask for one of our Child Passenger Seat Technicians.  If we do not have one on duty at the time the dispatch center will get in touch with someone to return your call.
Periodically the Sheriff's Office will conduct child safety seat checks.  These are designed to allow parents/guardians to come by and have their seat inspected for proper use and to ensure that there are not any recalls on the seat.  The last Child Safety Seat Inspection day was hosted by the Madison County Pilot Club on August 27, 2011 from 09:30-11:30 at the Madison County Senior Center.  During this time, technicians from the Madison County Sheriff's Office, Madison County EMS, Georgia State Patrol, and ACCPD inspected a totatl of 38 seats.  17 seats were replaced free of charge that day due to defects, recalls, or other safety concerns.  The Madison County Pilot Club applied for and was awarded a grant that allowed for the purchase of new Child Safety Seats which made it possible for us to replace the 17 that were deemed unsafe.
We will post any upcoming Child Safety Seat inspections on our website as they are being planned.  The Sheriff's Office is committed to educating the citizens of Madison County.  we have a short Child Safety Seat presentation that is followed by a check of participants' seats that we would be happy to present to your group.  If you are interested, or for more information, please contact Allison Craig at 706-795-6202 or acraig@madisonco.us
